The hurricane season that recently concluded was the least active of the past 10 years in the geographic area of the North Atlantic, the Mexican Gulf and the Caribbean Sea.
During the season beginning June 30 through November 30, only nine tropical storms emerged, of which only three became hurricanes, said Lixion Avila with the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
The expert gave a lecture on the topic in the 5th Cuban Congress on Meteorology that recently wrapped up in Havana, reported Granma newspaper.
Avila explained that the long permanence of three cold lows in the central zone of the tropical Atlantic kept hostile conditions for the formation of cyclones in the upper levels of the atmosphere.
This was a key factor in the decrease of the number of tropical storms in spite of warm waters, explained the expert.
Avila said those weather conditions, which were also present through most of the hurricane season in the Caribbean, might be related to the appearance of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon.
