Among action to reduce the infection is the free distribution of one million doses of anti-rabies vaccines, to immunize more than 90 percent of dogs with owner.

Cuban health authorities have reported that the country has not registered cases of human rabies in 2009, one of the oldest contagious diseases man and animals are currently suffering.

Raul Cruz, chief of the Zoonosis Prevention and Control Program of the Public Health Ministry, told Granma newspaper that the Isle of Youth special municipality has historically been declared a territory free of rabies.

Cruz noted that no cases of this illness have been reported in over 30 years in Havana province, Havana City, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey and Guantanamo.

Health authorities have maintained a systematic epidemiological surveillance, due to mongoose, dog and bats are an important natural reserve of this suffering transmitted by saliva.
