Decathlete of Holguin Leonel Suarez Fajardo, world runner up in Berlin, was selected among the ten best athletes in Cuba in 2009, what comes to be a fair recognition for his great results in the international arena in the year about to end.
Previously, this December, Leonel was chosen as the top athlete this year at Holguin province.
What Suarez has so far reached confirms that choosing him as the year’s rookie in Cuba last 2008 was no chance at all, but talent and perseverance that little by little have been placing him among the best decathletes in the world at the moment.
Wrestler Mijain Lopez (men category), and triple jumper Yargelis Savigne and cyclist Yumari Gonzalez (women category) were selected as the best athletes this year after having grabbed the world crowns in their corresponding disciplines.
Volleyball player Wilfredo Leon is the year’s rookie while Niriam Sinal (beach volleyball) and Alfredo Despaigne (baseball) were chosen as the best team athletes.
Yunier Iglesias is the best Physical Education teacher, Antuane Depestre (athletics) the best referee in the national category, and Tomas Azze (swimming) in the international category.
Along with Leonel, the following athletes were chosen among the best ones this year in Cuba: Roniel Iglesias (boxing), Roberlandy Simon (volleyball), Yarelis Barrios (athletics -discus), Yanet Bermoy (judo), Guillermo Martinez (athletics - javelin), Mabel Gay (athletics - triple jump), Oscar Rene Brayson (judo), Tahimi Castellanos (taekwondo), Osmay Acosta (boxing), Norge Luis Vera (pitcher - baseball) and Lisandra Guerra (road cycling).
