Hernandez said that in 2010 all the municipalities are to be supplied with this kind of laboratory, which will operate as Active Comprehensive Research Centres for studying people according to their age, physical condition, and risk of contracting diseases, in coordination with the primary healthcare system, through policlinics and family doctors.
With over 20 years experience, Cuba’s SUMA technology, has gone through 17 technology generations, which is extremely fast development for the medical sector, noted Hernandez.
The SUMA technology is currently being used in the diagnosis of HIV, hepatitis B, for vertical transmission during pregnancy and another five metabolic diseases in newborns.
Cuba currently has a network of 212 laboratories using this technology—there are 441 in Latin America— with excellent results.
This proves that developing nations can actually widen technologies to making healthcare accessible to all.
