The Vice President of the European Parliament Miguel Angel Martínez said Cuba should not be considered a suspect terrorist country and criticized the United States for considering the island nation as such.

In an interview by regional TV network Telesur, the Spanish parliamentarian said U.S. anti-Terrorism war should be led under concrete and true facts, rather than under political allegations that affect the people of countries known for their anti-terrorism history.

Martinez said he understands any government’s responsibility to guarantee the security of its citizens and that terrorism is an unquestionable threat, and at the same time he highlighted that Cuba is one of the countries that have excelled in the fight against that scourge.

He added that for such reasons Cuba should not be referred to as a suspect terrorist nation or suspect of any related crimes.

Martinez noted that the list of “terrorist-sponsoring countries,” that includes Cuba and
Iran among other nations, was made by the most reactionary administration that has ever existed in the history of the United States.

He added that the list was absolutely arbitrary and that it was poorly justified in a few extreme cases.

“I think the defence of citizens from terrorism can not be based on the identification of
terrorist countries,” the European deputy said.

Martinez made reference to the five Cubans unfairly imprisoned in the United States and noted that they were sentenced to outrageous terms precisely for having fought Miami-based errorist groups as part of their country’s intelligence service. He added that the imprisonment conditions under which the Cubans have been kept are unfair and inhumane.
