Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore said the screening of some of his films in Cuba was a privilege for him.
Tornatore, one of the most important post-war Italian filmmakers, is in Havana for the screening of a thorough selection of his films starting January 14 in the Riviera movie theatre in Havana.
The event was organized by the Union of Arci Film Circles (UCA-Arci) and the Cuban Institute of Arts and Film Industry.
During his first day on the island, Tornatore said he was very attracted to Cuba and hoped that his films call the attention of a people that is so distant to his country.
The Sicilian-born filmmaker said he was particularly happy for the presentation of his film Baaría, which deals with the numerous reasons that link a man to his birth place.
Other films included in the selection are The Professor, The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean, Everybody’s Fine and Nuovo Cinema Paradiso.
Tornatore said he wanted to meet with young Cuban filmmakers and film school students to pass some of the knowledge he has acquired throughout his career to the emerging filmmakers.
Salvatore Nastasi, with Italy’s Culture and National Patrimony Ministry, told the press that during their stay in Havana, he will be working with Cuban officials to increase cultural exchange between the two countries.
He expressed his interest in facilitating presentations of Cuban popular bands and the National Ballet in his country.
Greta Barbolini, UCA-Arci’s president, said since last year Italy is hosting a week dedicated to the Cuban cinema during which films by young directors were presented.
Barbolini announced that by the end of January Cuba will receive equipments to contribute to the restoration of the national cinema patrimony.
