The album Gracias (Thank You), nominated for this important prize, won a Latin Grammy in November, during the prize-giving ceremony of which Omara was an emcee thus becoming the first Cuban artist living on the island to participate in these ceremonies.
Produced by Brazilian Ale Siquiera, the CD includes pieces like Rabo de nube, Amame como soy, Vuela pena, Adios felicidad, Lo que me queda por vivir and Drume negrita.
Among guest stars in this album we find singers Pablo Milanes, Chico Buarque and Jorge Drexler, bassist Richard Bona, and pianist Chucho Valdes.
Born in Havana in October, 1930, Omara joined the D´Aida quartet in 1951 and has shared the stage with figures as important as Lucho Gatica, Pedro Vargas, Nat King Cole, Edith Piaf, Rita Montaner, Ignacio Villa (Bola de Nieve) and Benny More.
She began her career as a soloist in 1967, performing in Japan, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, the Nordic countries, and the entire American continent, from Chile to the United States.
Also nominated for this edition of the Grammies is the CD Juntos Para Siempre (Together Forever), by pianists Chucho and Bebo Valdes, adds the competition’s Web site.
The prize-giving ceremony will take place at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California, where there’s a lot of expectation for the awarding of prizes.
