The second phase of a project to restore the neighbourhoods of Tres Cruces (Three Crosses) and Plaza Santa Ana (Santa Ana Square) in the southern-central city of Trinidad, in Sancti Spiritus province, began earlier this week.

The Escambray newspaper of Sancti Spiritus reports that the project is being carried out in collaboration with the Spanish city of Cordoba.

The note adds that works in Santa Ana include the construction of benches and a fountain, the improvement of public lights, as well as the cleaning and adaptation of the ruins of the Church of Santa Ana, built in 1812.

In the meantime, in Tres Cruces, restoration works will be carried out in 42 houses at Calle Real del Jigue (Royal Street of Jigue) where five others have already been repaired since the project between Trinidad's Preservation Office and Viviendas Municipales de Córdoba S.A began in September 2009.

The project for the Plaza Tres Cruces, which is located in the corner of Amargura and Real del Jigue streets and has three wood crosses on stone slab bases, is not finished yet.

Meanwhile, Plaza Santa Ana, a center of activities for small traders and craftsmen since the 18th century, became a strategic spot for the Spanish army. It was included in the defensive plans of the region and batteries and arsenals were located in its surroundings.

Since 1990, Viviendas Municipales de Córdoba S.A is involved in a series of projects related to housing and restoration.
