A landmark study in the mountain range of Sancti Spiritus province was conducted as part of phase II clinical trial of Heberprot-P, a Cuban medicine, only one of its kind in the world, with proven effectiveness in treating deep ulcers in diabetic patients with amputation risk.

The health care clinic at Trinidad City, became the first medical unit of the Turquino Plan in the country chosen for this research that led to the investigation of nearly one hundred diabetics.

According to Regla Soto Aguila, in charge of this second phase of the trial, aiming to assess the effectiveness of the drug in early stage lesions of the diabetic foot (Wagner I and II), the selection has been considered more rigorous and requirements for inclusion deal with age, the patient should be over 18 years,and with an ulcer with an area between 2 and 30 square centimeters and no symptoms of infection in it.

The use of Heberprot-P in lesions with early stages of diabetic foot will definitevely become another achievement of science for clinical investigations conducted so far in deep and complex ulcers.

The effectiveness of this drug in wound healing and preservation of the limb thus preventing amputation has already been proven.
