The temblor hit just after 7 a.m. Friday, centered about 35 miles (55 kilometers) southeast of Baracoa, near the easternmost tip of the island, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
That is just 160 miles (255 kilometers) from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where a Jan. 12 quake destroyed much of the city and killed countless thousands.
"Yes we felt it. We felt it strong," said Maira Legra, whose son runs a home offering lodging to tourists in the colonial beach-side city of Baracoa.
"There was no problem. I was in bed because it was early, but I didn't get up."
