The Center for Democracy in the Americas released the following statement by Sarah Stephens, executive director, on bipartisan legislation introduced today in the House of Representatives to increase agriculture exports to Cuba and to lift the travel ban on all Americans wishing to travel to the island:
"There is new momentum in Congress for replacing the policy of starving and isolating Cuba with one that uses our best exports -- food and the good will fostered by American tourists -- to provide real benefits for and contact with the Cuban people.
"Representatives Collin Peterson (D-MN) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) and their cosponsors deserve great credit for legislation that will advance our country's national interest and create new profits and jobs here at home for our agriculture and tourism industries, at no cost to America's taxpayers."
The Center for Democracy in the Americas (CDA) is devoted to changing U.S. policy toward the countries of the Americas by basing our relations on mutual respect, fostering dialogue with those governments and movements with which U.S. policy is at odds, and recognizing positive trends in democracy and governance.
In 2009, the CDA published its report on engagement with Cuba, "9 Ways for US to Talk to Cuba and for Cuba to Talk to US," which included recommendations for increasing food sales to Cuba and broadening private sector contacts by the U.S. business community with the Cuban people.
