In Holguin, the first studies on the disease were conducted in the 1960s and 1970s, eventually leading to the foundation of the Hereditary Ataxia Research Center (CIRAH) in 2000.
Headed by Dr. Luis Velázquez Pérez, the CIRAH has created therapies for the physical and psychological rehabilitation of patients, greatly improving their quality of life and delaying the progress of the disease.
CIRAH’s prenatal and presymptomatic diagnosis methods are also renowned the world over.
