The oldest school for the blind in Cuba in the capital arrived at its 85th year of founding with popular recognition and that has graduated thousands of persons.

Currently named after revolutionary Abel Santamaria, this center was founded by a council of women under the name of Varona Suarez Cultural Foundation for the Blind.

In 1943 this institution founded the first Cuban Braille Library that, in addition to its dots and dashes, has 63 valid figures to form letters, number, punctuation marks, mathematics and musicography.

The National Information Agency also recalls that during the 50s of last century and orchestra of 13 blind musicians was formed, the Cuban Jazz, and other artistic groups.

Prior to the Revolution on January 1 of 1959 this facility was the only one of its kind in the island and since 1961 the State assumed the costs and improved educational methods.

Now, Cuba has 15 special schools throughout the provinces and special municipality in the Isle of Youth with enrollment of a thousand students who later continue to centers of higher education.
