The «blue» teams only need one triumph to win the gold medal. This Wednesday the men will spike before the girls.

Just the way they did during the regular calendar, the capital’s teams were one step away from the throne in this National Volleyball League. The final in both sexes will continue today in the Kid Chocolate multipurpose sports hall.

Among women, the capital’s girls re-imposed their rule in three sets against the East’s girls, with scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21.

Once again the young Lianne Castaneda shined, besides being the most valuable player, thanks to 62 percent shooting; she was the top scorer of the match with 17 points.

In the second hour the Capital and Western teams fought a beautiful duel, which was very emotional for both sides.

Supported by good performances of Wilfredo León, Robertlandy Simón and the rising star Fernando Hernández, the home side took the lead with a convenient first set, 25-18.

However in the second score they played «kill or die», with constant ties in the score.

The breakthrough came when the passer Raidel Hierrezuelo shot an unstoppable missile from the service line to let the capital’s team celebrate with a 33-31 score.

Resistance was a warning, the «Ruso» Sánchez, Leal, Yohandri Díaz and the rest of their team mates closed ranks to avoid a clean sweep with a 25-23 victory in the third set.

However, the impetus was over and 14-25 adverse score showed the sharp fall off in the losers’ performance.

After these results, the « blue » teams only need one triumph to obtain the crown.

Today the men will spike before women, and if there are no changes, tomorrow the eagerly awaited battle between the champion

teams and the most outstanding figures of the tournament will take place.
