The work carried out in Cuba to prevent the spreading of the A H1N1 influenza virus was acknowledged by Doctor Lea Guido, representative on the island of the Pan-American and World Health organizations (PAHO-WHO).

Guido highlighted that, unlike other nations in the area, multiple contagion of this disease has been prevented in Cuba, even without the presence of vaccines, which will soon begin to be administered in the national territory.

It’s worthy of admiration -she said- to see how even children are aware of the need of practicing hygienic habits, and that’s why we see them claiming their right to wash their hands, an example of the good work carried out in terms of health revention.

She pointed out that, this April 7, Cubans will have more than enough reasons to celebrate World Health Day under the slogan “City Planning and Healthy Life; 100 cities, 1,000 lives.”

Guido recalled that in large cities of the world there are more cases of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and that there’s more violence, and that therefore more strategies should be developed to face natural or pandemic-epidemiological disasters, all of which justifies dedicating this April 7 to the cities.

Gladis Becker, director for Physical Education and Health Promotion of the National Institute for Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, stressed that celebrations to mark World Health Day will be held in all provinces and that the main meeting will take place in the Cuban capital.
