The contribution of the Cuban cinema to the Cuban culture before 1959 was subject to constant discussion and controversies by the intellectuality.
After the triumph of the 1959 revolution, the new institution had to ambitious plans: to create a national cinematography and to promote the creation of a more informed and cultivated cinematographic audience.
It was then evident that every fiction film, documentary and cartoon produced in our country was being made in the thinking area, in order to describe, justify and reward the way we the Cubans create, life and dream.
The Cuban cinema has established its undeniable contribution to the world cinematography with important movies, such as Memorias del subdesarrollo, Lucía, El retrato de Teresa, Elpidio Valdés, Viva Cuba and La Bella del Alambra.
Important creators such as Santiago Álvarez, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Humberto Solás, Pastor Vega and Juan Padrón are ndispensable references for every lightly cultivated spectator on an international level.
The ICAIC fills an important part of the cultural life in Cuba; its work goes beyond, to other artistic expressions, such as music and painting where are made important contributions. A special mention is the Cuban cinematographic posters, a project that exceed the creativity to become an artistic product with its own values.
In this 51 anniversary, the ICAIC retains its legacy to the Cuban and Latin American culture and maintains new challenges in its walk around the world.
