munequitos matanzas

Palma, (Diario de Mallorca).- Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, a live history of musical Cuba, will impart a lesson of cultural history April 7th at the Teatro Principal of Palma. The Ambassadors of the "Rumba" have included Majorca in their world annual tour, a tradition that goes back at 1989.

The origins of Los Muñequitos go back to the first days of October of 1952, when a group of young "rumberos" (rumba players) began to play on the tables of a bar, El Gallo, in Matanzas, with glasses, tablespoons and bottles.

In return, they received the audience's applause that, far from getting lost in the time, today it still continues resounding.

The group, integrated in its beginnings by percussionists and singers, will interpret in Palma a repertoire that is always nurtured from Guaguancó, the most popularized variant of rumba, the Yambú, an old urban style of rumba, and Columbia, a country style rumba danced only by men. In their song book they don't only cultivate the gender of the rumba, they also make "yoruba, abakuá and brúcamo" music, with their respective original instruments.

The group that sounds the maracas and the conga drum, the "quinto" and the "conga", became a dance group with the entrance of the dancer Diosdado Fields in 1965, who is today the manager of the formation.

The group has now seven dancers, three girls: Ana Pérez, Vivian Fields and Yamilé Fields; and four men, Terrible Fields, Facundo Pelladito, Diosdado and Luis Deyvis.

The international career of Los Muñequitos, three times nominees to Latin Grammy, started in 1989, with concerts in England, Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany.

In several occasions they have shared scenario with illustrious countrymen such as Chucho Valdés and Irakere, Jerry Rivera, Omara Portuondo or Juan Formell and Van Van. In 2002, coinciding with their 50 anniversary, they published the record Rumba de corazón.
