The Cuban government has asked for more efficient agriculture to cut its annual food imports.

Cuba, which pays more than US$1.5 billion per annum on imports, has urged farmers to boost production.

The Communist Party newspaper in Cuba has reported comments by Vice President Jose Ramon, who has told gatherings of farmers that Cuba needs to achieve a strong agricultural base in order to increase production.

Responding to the farmers, he reportedly admitted to some government obstacles and bureaucratic bungles that had bogged down the distribution and transportation of some products to outlying centres.

Cuba’s president, General Raul Castro, recently said that an increase in food production was important for national security.

He said the government could not afford to import food in times while the country was suffering a severe lack of liquidity.
