The Cuba-China Friendship ophthalmologic hospital in Xining, the capital of the mentioned province, is assisting people that were injured in the tragedy, said head of the Cuban Medical Service to China Eddy Milvia Hernandez in a telephone interview with Prensa Latina in this country.
She said that as soon as the autonomous Tibetan Yushu prefecture learned about the disaster caused by the 7.1-degree earthquake in the Richter scale, all the Cuban health workers there expressed their willingness to assist the patients if necessary.
Hernandez explained that they communicated the decision to the municipal health authorities, who thanked the gesture.
In the mentioned health institution, opened in December, 2006, 15 Cubans are working, including doctors, nurses, and technicians.
Similar hospitals are working in Hebiand and Datong, in the Henan and Shanxi provinces, respectively, as part of a program that prioritizes medical assistance to the population in remote areas and with lower income.
Official data said earthquake deaths exceed 1,000 and over 11,000 injured people.
