FAO Reassesses Role of Agriculture

A note released by the Havana Office of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) explained that high level participants from 33 countries of the area are expected as well as observers from other nations.
The importance of social protection networks will be reviewed in the event as well as the behavior of agriculture in the context of the current world crisis.
This kind of conference is the main meeting sponsored by the organization in the region and its prime objective is to review work done during the previous two years (2008-2009).
Other subjects will be dealt with this time regarding relevance in the spheres of agriculture and food and priorities will be set for 2010-2011.
Other issues to be analyzed include the situation of food and nutritional security, the climate change and its effect on agriculture, forest and fishing production.
Also studied are rural development, a political program for family agriculture, challenges and forecasts for South America, Central America and the Caribbean as well as the reconstruction of Haiti process.
The event is divided in two parts: the Technical Committee to meet on the 26th and 27th followed by the Plenary Session from the 28th to the 30th.
