“I want to formally congratulate the Cuban government and, in particular, the doctors and other health professionals currently working here in Haiti, often in very difficult conditions and giving all their love to the long-suffering Haitian people,” he said.
During a courtesy visit to the Cuban embassy in Port-au-Prince, the UN official said he was interested in learning about the Cubans’ work in Haiti in detail.
“I headed the UN Mission in Haiti some years ago and since then I realized that the Cuban doctors’ work here was extraordinary,” he added.
“We realize you are carrying out an excellent mid and long term planning work to have clinics, hospitals and other health facilities all across the country.”
“This project has gained momentum as Cuba, on behalf of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA), and other countries are coordinating their efforts with the Haitian Ministry of Public Health,” Mulet pointed out.
The head of Cuba’s Henry Reeve Medical Brigade for Emergency Situations, Yillian Jimenez, and the coordinator of the Cuban Comprehensive Health Program in Haiti, Carlos Garcia, gave the UN official details about the work Cuban health professionals have been doing in Haiti since they arrived there in 1998.
