The Laboratory of Antibody and Experimental Biomodels (Labex) in Santiago de Cuba shipped its first export of leucocytes marker, used to diagnosis several malignant diseases.

The shipment went to the Brazilian company, Biomanguinhos. Leucocytes markers can diagnose several malignant diseases including leukemia, lymphoma and facilitate the verification of the behavior of cellular immunology in the case of HIV.

Labex is intended for the production of reagents for hematological and immunological diagnosis, aiming to substitute imports in this area.

Labex’s main line of research is hemoclassifiers, which are reagents for classifying blood groups, said Labex Director Dr. Elio Prego Cisneros.

Other areas of research are tumor markers; reagents used to diagnose different types of tumors.

“We are undertaking other research related to autoimmune diseases, and commercializing some animal derivatives used as supplements for some types of microbiological, immunological and hematological diagnosis, including sheep blood and serums from mice, sheep and rabbits,” said Cisneros.

These products have not only an economical impact but also a social impact, because these reagents have been introduced to various consultations, ensuring a better and earlier diagnosis of diseases.

Cuba currently has a state-of-the-art technology biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry that has improved the lives of its citizens and is starting to open export markets.
