The proposal was presented by the island’s permanent representative to the world organization, Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, during the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) at the UN
headquarters in New York city.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Cuban diplomat said that Israel should adhere to the NPT and carry out its nuclear activities in compliance with the current on-proliferation regulations.
Nuñez Mosquera regretted the slow pace towards the elimination of atomic arsenals by nations that have this kind of weapons.
“News about the improvement of all kinds of weapons and the strengthening of military alliances are alarming,” he pointed out.
“Humanity can not live in peace when, 40 years after the NPT was signed, there are still some 32,300 nuclear weapons and over 12,000 of them are ready to be used, which would be more than enough to erase all signs of life from the face of the Earth,” the Cuban representative added.
He also labelled the current world military expenditure as unacceptable and said that nuclear disarmament is a priority issue for Cuba. (ACN)
