“Although there is no immediate threat to Cuba by the expansion of crude oil, the fact is that our scientists monitor the movement of that unstoppable oil slick” explained to ACN Orlando Rey Santos, an expert from the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA).
He said it is imperative to keep abreast of what is happening in the region affected by the multiplicity of factors that are mixed, including ocean currents, winds and climate events, by the fact that pollution does not recognize borders.
The oil slick is a disaster of tremendous magnitude which already reaches an uninhabited 1,600 meters and technologies that have not yet yielded any results, as the application of chemicals, Rey santos said.
There is already talk –Rey Santos said- of 13 million gallons of oil spilled at a rate of 200 000 gallons per day, in one of the areas of major marine biodiversity of the planet.
Rey Santos recalled that this area is a bird’s migration corridor along the coasts of the United States and Mexico, with wetlands and aquatic species habitats of which, if damaged, would suffer because many nest or spawn are in a key moment in their life cycle.
In its most recent reflection, called “The hateful tyranny imposed on the world”, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro denounced that the ecological disaster of the Gulf of Mexico shows how little can governments do against those who control the capital.
