Lagos — Minister of Sports and Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Is Ibrahim Bio, who has directed that henceforth, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test is compulsory in all age group competitions organised by the NSC.

This, he said, was in compliance with international standards, and in furtherance of Federal Government's commitment to ensuring that only genuine athletes within the stipulated age grade represent the country.

To achieve this, he further directed that all officials should strictly adhere to, and respect all international codes of practice in the discharge of their respective roles and responsibilities.

This means, therefore, that compliance with age requirements for athletes will no longer be optional, but mandatory.

In a circular to presidents of sports federations dated May 10, 2010, the minister emphasised that contravention of this directive will attract sanctions.

Meanwhile, as part of preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India,Cuban coaches will arrive Nigeria in the first week of July, to begin training of Nigerian athletes in boxing, athletics and the jumps.

This decision was reached between the NSC and the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria,Elio Savon Oliva, when he paid a courtesy call on Bio in his office last week Thursday.

Bio told his visitor that Nigeria would collaborate with Cuba to improve the standard of boxing and other sports in which Cuba has good technical knowledge.

The training programme, the minister disclosed, was part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Nigeria and Cuba has in sports.

He added that the training programme would include Nigerian athletes taking part in quality competitions in Cuba and other places, for them to acquire requisite exposure.

The Cuban Ambassador on his part said Cuba is willing to share her experience with Nigeria in sports, while promising that the coaches, who will come to Nigeria, will be of the highest quality Cuba can afford.
