HAVANA, Cuba, May 25 (acn) The 9th Iberian-American Meeting on Gender and Communication began this Wednesday in this capital, and will run until Friday.
Journalists, researchers and experts from Venezuela, Mexico,Colombia, Spain and France will join the 35 Cuban delegates representing national and local media outlets, universities and other institutions, to analyze the impact of the world crisis on women and the treatment of her imagine by the media.
A look at the problems of women, for being the ones who suffer the most as a consequence of the economic crises, the eterioration of the environment and droughts, will be the focus of a panel scheduled for Wednesday, after the inauguration of the event at the venue of the local government in Old Havana.
The first day of the meeting will also include the presentation of the books “50 voces y rostros de líderes campesinas”, by Yohanka Valdes and Yuliel Cruz, and “Por andar vestida de hombre” and “Gallegas en Cuba”, the two of them by Julio Cesar Gonzalez and on CD format.
Works in commissions will take place on May 27 and 28, when debates will be held on new alternatives to the sexist discourse against violence, from the perspective of participating countries.
With 18 years of existence, the meetings on Gender and Communication have increasingly gained in depth and quality, thanks to the constant efforts of its organizers: the Association of Cuban Journalists, the Federation of Cuban Women, and the Cuban Association of Social Communicators.
The event is convened every two years and it’s aimed at favoring exchanges with experts in this genre, analyzing the social prominence of women in the region, and contributing to have a deeper approach to their reality.
The 35 papers to be presented will tackle issues like the treatment given by the media to HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive rights, the good practices of non-sexist journalism, and the image of women,among others.
