HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 2 (acn) Vice President Esteban Lazo heads the Cuban delegation to an international summit on Haiti that takes place today in the Dominican resort of Punta Cana.
Upon his arrival in Punta Cana for the so-called World Summit on the Future of Haiti: Solidarity beyond the Crisis, Lazo told Prensa Latina news agency that Cuba has been assisting Haiti for many years and a lot before an earthquake devastated the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, last January.
He noted that more than 1,600 Cuban health professionals are providing services in all Haitian communes where they have attended to nearly 14 million patients over the last 11 years.
Lazo added that Cuban specialists are working on the creation of a comprehensive and efficient health system in Haiti following an initiative by the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, in cooperation with the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA).
He pointed out that the Cuban delegation will offer details of this initiative during the summit as it already did in two previous international meetings of experts on the topic.
The ‘World Summit on the Future of Haiti: Solidarity beyond the Crisis’ takes place with the presence of over 30 heads of state and government or their representatives as well as delegates from 35 international organizations.
