Coastal villages have the peculiar charm of the sea, those with ports have the attractiveness of the ships and the come and go in their coasts, perhaps it is the sea breeze, or the water-land duality that constantly surrounds them, but the truth is that the locals are deep rooted in their town.

 

Puerto Esperanza is rule and not exception. The challenge

The passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike caused severe damage to the infrastructure that traditionally enjoyed those who made of Puerto Esperanza their rest spot, but facing this summer they have recovered a lot and expect to be ready for early July.

Michel Rodríguez, president of the Popular Council, accompanied us when touring the places recovered and insisted that the labor force used in the construction tasks is in the hands of the villagers.

Artex keeps an offer that includes the sale of beer in Cuban pesos and there is a cafeteria with light food offers; the employees stated some difficulties in the options with meat stability, but the major challenge today is to finish the cabins of Las Brisas del Mar complex, which has a restaurant, a cafeteria, a small ranchon and the rooms.

Pablo Marcial Rodríguez, the manager, makes sure that all of the building actions have been executed by the very workers; the main problem they have is the lack of iron-parts to conclude the toilets installation and the day of our visit, there was only one cabin left to be roofed.

They expect to have them ready for this summer, but it depends on the arrival of materials and the replacement of all the locks.

Formerly, these cabins were delivered to different organisms so that the workers enjoy, but from now on the facilities will be run for the direction of Commerce.

With an almost repaired infrastructure the men only have to intensify the work to increase the summer offers, specially elaborating products, but the conditions of the facility can be improved, as well as the hygiene.

We saw a lot of activity in the sport fishing area of the village, several fishermen were restoring and getting their boats ready, since these are the months when the sport is practiced the most.

This zone of the seaboard has been traditionally visited by families of Pinar del Rio, house owners and occasional visitors, and as good hosts, the locals ready the conditions for a warm welcome.

Not everything is perfect, but they are proud of the things achieved and the beauties of their milieu. They wish to have other options so that the vacationers could enjoy of the nature preserved there and the quality of the beaches, they have own ideas, only need to find someone that becomes interested on that dream.

In the mean time, the villagers of Puerto Esperanza fight for wiping off the damages left by hurricanes and improve with own efforts the life conditions of the community.
