Cuba today is showing encouraging environmental results as it implements several strategies to reduce soil degradation and the effects of drought.
Cuba is celebrating the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought with both immediate and far-reaching projects, such as a national soil improvement and conservation program, another for combating desertification and drought, and a third for the production of organic matter.
The Turquino-Manati Plan, aimed at repopulating the country's mountainous and most remote regions, also continues to be part of the national strategy.
With the objective of counteracting soil deterioration, Cuba has increased its wooded reas and integral tree farms, and has a desertification risk map, with an improved early alert system to combat agricultural and meteorological drought.
The country also has a monitoring system to control plagues and crop diseases through natural means and bioproducts.
