To 7 year old Leonardo Cabrera is very easy to handle Negrito.
The existence of ponies in the Basic Unit of Cooperative Production UBPC "Galafre" of Turcios Lima Livestock Company, generated big surprise in those who were listening to the information, since these small horses has been limited to zoos and exhibition fairs.
Thanks to whippers Reynaldo Gomez and Carlos Andres Veloz, in charge of the free breeding, we could see an uneven herd of these little horses that have found the best of homes in the coast, feeding from "panama" and other weeds they choose, with enviable spirit and health to the point that some people prefer them for some tasks rather than horses.
Marcelo Contreras Amaya, president of the Unit, has been always attracted to the small animals brought from Placetas by Raul Hernandez Luaces, who is always alert to any improvement or difficulty of the herd, and said to himself that he was going to keep them, so he counts on the restless "Apingorá, a 20 year old stallion that given its features appears to be a Shetland pony, although we could not confirm it, since Mr Luaces doubts there is any left of the 24 that in 1986 were distributed in some farms of the region.
There is the same amount now, achieved in a mixed crossbreeding in order just to reproduce them and keep them given their strength, low mortality rate, docility and self-feeding, they have even obtained some ponies that surpass the 1.48 meters set for an original one, but beyond that reveal an economic and useful animal, that we occur to call the San Juan pony.
The complicity look of Apingora, gave us statements to justify the importance of this breed that have managed to survive on their own and keep optimal conditions to be destined for children activities, for which the Lenin amusement park bought two of these ponies and announced they will come back when they decide to sell more.
The members of the UBPC intend to keep fostering the breeding and sell the males, which will contribute to rise the profits of the entity, which surpasses already the cow milk production, carry out the bull fattening and show an increasing production for their workers.
The only thing left is getting specialised and breed the small females that most of the times determine the size of the new pony, since the forefathers of present day horses had almost this height and as they became domesticated got larger.
The presence of ponies in tourist centers with conditions for that, also in parks and in celebration events will be appreciated especially by children and let us think if they are imported why not exporting them.
