USA challenged in Geneva for violations against Cuba

Thursday, 24 June 2010 09:39. HAVANA, Cuba.- Delegates from Cuba and other countries brought up on Wednesday at the heart of the World Trade Organization (WTO) the question of the US violations against the Caribbean island in basic principles of the international exchange of goods.
Washington's infringements of the principles of trade and its consent to the misappropriation of brands against the island were analyzed during the ordinary meeting of the world body's Organ for Solution of Differences (OSD).
The representatives from the European Union, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, China, Venezuela, Mexico, India and Vietnam supported the Cuban delegation's statement, the Prensa Latina news agency reports.
They firmly denounced the illegal and amoral Section 211, which violates the norms of respect to copyright and refuted the brief report on the situation presented at the forum by US representatives.
In the document, number 91 of its category, the US delegation tried to demonstrate that the government from that country is working with the Congress to comply with the OSD recommendations.
The demand insists in that the US fulfils its obligations, respects the principle of quick fulfilment and abolishes Section 211, in force since 1998.
Fidel Ortega, adviser of Cuba's Permanent Mission to the WTO, called upon the US to explain the supposed efforts made to fulfil what has been agreed in terms of respect towards copyright.
After underlining that the current US stance casts doubt on its work on the issue, he pointed out that in spite of being one of the nations that are more interested in the implementation of copyright norms, it takes no notice of the decisions by the litigation organ.
The use of the Havana Club rum brand by the Bacardi firm, constitute the basis of the dispute.
This transgression has been disqualified by the top trade entity, without a convincing answer on the part of the United States, aimed at abiding by what has been stipulated by the international community.
