Friends of The Third World volunteer coordinator Marian Waltz said the nonprofit organization is not just about talking about peace, but about “actually working to build long-lasting peace.” Tonight’s event, “Friendshipment to Cuba,” is working to offer humanitarian aid to Cuba.
“Changes can happen slowly when only government is involved, but there are certain things we can do,” administrator Jim Goetsch said. “We know there is a lot of history, but our event is not political. There is a need in Cuba, and we hope positive things can happen.”
The free potluck dinner, held at the Unitarian Meeting House on 5310 Old Mill Road from 6:30-8:30 p.m., will feature guest speaker Ellen Bernstein.
Bernstein is currently the associate director of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (I.C.F.O.)/Pastors for Peace. According to its website, Pastors for Peace is the I.C.F.O’s special ministry component founded entirely on the basis of providing aid to Latin America and the Caribbean.
Bernstein has also led more than 60 trips to Cuba, 18 being Congressional delegations.
Donations will also be collected on site. Due to trade restrictions, limited items can be accepted. However, Goetsch said that by working with the I.C.F.O./Pastors for Peace, he anticipates the items will reach those in need by the end of July.
