CIENFUEGOS, Cuba.- The Cuban social project is an example in the fulfilment of the so-called Millennium Goals, stated on Thursday in this capital Rolando Garcia, representative in Cuba of the United Nations Population Fund.
During a visit to Cienfuegos province, the official explained that –from the eight major commitments adopted by 189 nations in 2000- Cuba shows satisfactory results in the reduction of infant mortality rate and in the accessibility to universal education.
He also highlighted the island’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS and to achieve gender equality.
Garcia pointed out that there’s still a lot to be done on the island in fields like maternal health and the protection of the environment before the pact’s due date, established for 2015.
According to the official Web site of the United Nations Development Program, these goals propose to eliminate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve elementary education, promote gender equality, reduce infant mortality rate, improve maternal
health, combat HIV/AISD and malaria –among other diseases-, guarantee the sustainability of the environment, and promote a world association for development.
