WASHINGTON | Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:20am EDT.WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. National Hurricane Center said a tropical depression or tropical storm could form at any time on Thursday in the Caribbean east of Cuba.
The center said there was a 70 percent chance a tropical storm could form from a weather system that was over the islands of Acklins and Great Inagua.
Showers and winds from the storm were expected over the Bahamas, portions of Cuba, Florida and the Florida Keys, the center said.
Forecaster models showed the storm could head northwest into the Gulf of Mexico, which could affect oil and gas production as well as containment and cleanup efforts in BP's oil spill.
