Cuba counts with the technical support of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) for the preparation of its development strategy and exploitation of coconut production, reported that institution of the United Nations.
Recently, a consultant of the Retired Experts Program of FAO, Henry Tillekeratne, visited the island and provided assistance in this area.
The newsletter of that organization, issued by its office in Havana, stated that Baracoa in the eastern province of Guantanamo was mainly where Tillekeratne conducted his work.
He, together with local authorities, participated in a Science Workshop which brought together producers and directors to discuss the state of the production of coconuts and its use in the area.
They also discussed the development strategies of coconut cultivation in this region to support capacity building and jobs for women and economic self-sustainability.
Baracoa, the main coconut producing area in Cuba, is recovering its plantations after their devastation by hurricanes.
