Cuban Norge Sotomayor won on Monday the gold medal in the 400 m hurdle in the 1st Youth Olympic Games of Singapore 2010, with a time of 50.69 seconds.

Despite an inopportune rain that bothered the runners´ eyes, Sotomayor crossed the finishing line 12 hundredths of a second ahead of Indian Kumar Durgesh, who pressured the Cuban to finish off.

"To be an Olympic champion is an indescribable feeling; it goes beyond one´s initial dreams," Sotomayor told Prensa Latina right after the race, still wrapped up in the Cuban flag.

He added that the rain made the race difficult for all the runners, who did their best on the track. Some of them ran personal bests.

Sotomayor´s gold medal is Cuba´s fourth title in Singapore 2010. Pentathlete Leidy Laura Moya, gymnast Ernesto Vila and canoeist Osvaldo Sacerio also won the gold. The Island´s delegation has, moreover, racked up three silver and two bronze medals.
