The Cuban customs system signed an agreement in Beijing with China Light Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economic & Technical Cooperation (CLETC) for the purchase of $1.48 million worth of border security inspection equipment.

CLETC is a state enterprise that helps light-industry companies export their products.

The purchase includes X-ray inspection machines, explosive and drug detectors, components of closed-circuit television, and computer equipment to enhance Intranet capabilities.

Most of the equipment is provided by Nuctech Co. Ltd., a spinoff of Tsinghua University in Beijing. Cuba is already using equipment made by Nuctech, one of the world’s largest providers of security inspection systems.

Prensa Latina said Cuba will use the equipment to “achieve a balance between facilitation and control of the growing activity through the country’s gateways.”
