Sunday, 19 September 2010 16:10. Cuba (Havana) – Syria and Cuba signed a memo of understanding on establishing a center in Syria for treatment with placental tissue and producing derivatives from human placentas, in addition to undertaking a joint study for early diagnosis of diseases for people with disabilities.

The memo also stipulates for cooperation between the Optometry Hospital and Damascus and Ramon Pando Ferrer Hospital in Havana.

In a statement to SANA at the conclusion of his visit to Cuba, Syrian Minister of Health Rida Saiid said that he viewed the remarkable Cuban expertise in healthcare and medical services and discussed means for benefiting from it and exchanging expertise.

He noted that the week-long visit was an opportunity to discuss boosting cooperation between the two countries' ministries of health through meetings with Cuban Minister of Health Roberto Morales, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Jose Miyar Barruecos, and other officials.

The visit included a tour of hospitals, health care centers and pharmaceutical factories, in addition to centers specializing in cancer, disability, biotechnology and blood derivatives.

Syria and Cuba's ministries of health signed an agreement in June 1998 on cooperation in various fields including exchanging information, financing and carrying out programs and research on contagious and non-contagious diseases, training medical staff, and facilitating the trade of medicine, pharmaceuticals and vaccines between the two countries.
