Monday, September 27, 2010; A14. WASHINGTON POST. Former defense official Stephen Johnson's Sept. 23 letter missed the point about U.S. policy toward Cuba.

[Johnson's letter] http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/22/AR2010092205720.\html.

Cuba does not present a threat to the United States, and there is no justification or rationale for any level of sanctions or hostile policies. I see essentially no possibility that terrorists might attack from Cuba.

The current policy punishes Americans by restricting their freedom to travel or to associate with whomever they please. It also punishes ordinary Cubans who suffer the economic consequences.

The current policy toward Cuba is a monumental failure, but even if persisting could lead to a change in Cuba's government, it does more harm than good to the U.S. image and American interests.
