HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 28 (acn) The first international conference of the Cuban Entrepreneurial Group of Biopharmaceutical and Chemical Products (LABIOFAM) started today in Havana together with a symposium on natural products applied in the therapy against cancer.

Lectures, round tables and a trade market, among other activities will be part of the event organized by the Pan-American Health Organization, the Cuban ministries of Agriculture , Science, Technology and Environment, Public Heath and the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute.

More than 95 percent of medications used in Cuba for animals are produced by LABIOFAM. Also, LABIOFAM has obtained natural products used in humans as nutritional supplements, like the Vimang extracted from the bark of the mango tree and used in the treatment of different types of anemia, cancer,inflammations, brain stroke and illnesses associated to excess of iron.

Julia Sanchez Diaz, head of Marketing, told Granma that the institution developed, among other products, a pesticide for biological vector control named Griselesf that has been used to eliminate the malaria-transmitter mosquito in several countries, particularly in Africa.

The first LABIOFAM Conference will be attended by a delegation from Tanzania made up of scientists, officials from the ministry for the Stockbreeding and Fishing Development, the directors of the Central Veterinary Laboratories and the Traditional Medicine Institute, as the two countries have been recently working on ways to expand mutual collaboration.
