2010.11.02 - 10:03:21 / [email protected]. HAVANA, CUBA.- Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon received a delegation from the European United Left–Nordic Green Left (EUL-NGL), a political group with seats in the European Parliament.

Alarcon welcomed European MP from the Spanish Communist Party Willy Meyer who leds a 17 MPs group made up of Spaniards, Portuguese, Greek, Cypriot, Germans and Latvian.

Alarcon thanked the group, made up of mainly young parliamentarians, for their solidarity and friendship with Cuba. Meyer thanked the Cuban leader for the welcoming and ratified their decision to keep on fighting for the improving of the bonds between Cuba and the European Union (EU)

He said they are part of the only European parliamentarian group that voted against the 1996 EU Joint Position towards Cuba where they followed US positions and conditioned the improvement of relations to changes in the Cuban social and political system, which Cuba rejects for considering it interference in its internal affairs.

The EU MP underscored that they will not give up in their efforts to achieve a much needed understanding between the EU and Cuba. He also rejected the 50 year long US economic, financial and commercial blockade against Cuba.

He also told the press that the Joint Position was obsolete since “they only apply it to Cuba and without a reason.” The delegation arrived in Cuba last Sunday, and is carrying out a series of visits that already included one to the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).
