Barnet Gives Lectures in Italy on Don Fernando Ortiz

2010.11.13 - 10:43:42 / [email protected]. Havana, Cuba.- Intellectual Miguel Barnet gave in Rome two lectures on Cuban sage Fernando Ortiz, at the Cervantes Center and at the dance school of the Timbalaye project, respectively.
Barnet, president of the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC), in a meeting sponsored by the Ache Foundation and the Timbalaye project, described Ortiz as the most useful man for 20th century social sciences in Cuba, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.
Cuban artists Ulises Mora and Irma Castillo, who head the Timbalaye project, referred to the significance of Barnet’s visit to Italy and the importance of his work for Cuban culture, as well as his work with Ortiz’s legacy.
According to the source, the writer visited the Spanish Bookstore near the Cervantes Center, where he spoke with its owners and signed copies of his books.
Attending the activity were Carina Soto, head of the Cuban diplomatic mission in Italy, and officials from the Cuban embassy in Rome and at the Holy See.
In the presence of students from various nationalities, Barnet also spoke at the dance school of the Timbalaye project, on the value of the illuminating and positivist ideas of Ortíz and on his contribution to 20th century Cuban public life.
