11/17/2010. Poster “La Joven Estampa 2009”, created by Nelson Ponce, designer of Casa de las Americas, was selected in the graphic design category, to represent Cuba at the 2nd International Design Biennale (BID), which will take place in Madrid, Spain, November 22-26, and that will have the attendance of 23 countries.

“La Joven Estampa” Award, organized by Casa de las Americas since 1987, summons young Latin American and Caribbean artists aged under 35, who use engraving in their dissimilar manifestations and techniques as their way of expression.

The international jury, made up by Carmelo Di Bártolo, Adelia Borges, Lily Diaz, Fernando Gutierrez, Antonio Toca and Julius Wiedemann, chose Cubans Alejandro Rosales Trinchet, Miguel Gomez Florido, Jose L. Cabrera Olivo in the industrial design category for “La lanceta laser” (Laser Lancet), and Jesus Miguel Frias Baez in fashion, for “Familia de Contenedores” (Family of Containers).

Completing the Cuban delegation in graphic design are Alexis Manuel Rodriguez Diezcabezas de Armada, TareK Julio Gerpe Chavez, Eduardo Azcue Mazola, Maria Margarita Rodriguez Hernandez (Visual Identity Program of the Information System of the Cuban Television  [SITC]); Caridad Gonzalez Maldonado, Yoryet Mery Musa, Meyling Marrero Perez, Saylin Perez Cabreja (Social Project “Coleccion Aniímate”); ELESTUDIO GRAFICO (disco A la felicidad, by Haydee Milanes); Michele Miyares Hollands (Film Festival Posters); Pedro Garcia-Espinosa Carrasco, Laura Cuendias Abreu, Yosvenky Hernandez (Visual Identity System for the Gardening and Crop Enterprise “Quinta Vereda”); and Sergio Peña Martinez, Milvia Perez Perez (Comprehensive Image of Fast Food Service DICHIN).

In the industrial design category appear Noslen Hernandez Perez (Cuberteria Quirofano) and Maray Pereda Peña and Maite Dumenigo Bordon (Uniforms Design for the Cuban Aviation Company S.A.).

According to what is announced in its official website: BID10 intends to highlight social aspects of the Ibero American design and to spread design and designers’ links with the development of Ibero American countries. Besides debating about such themes as “Diseño para todos” (Design for All) and “Diseño para el desarrollo” (Design for Development), the Biennale will host the 2nd Meeting on teaching and Design, on Wednesday, November 24, where the participants will reflect on contents, processes and structure of the Higher Education in Design, will resume the discussions of the previous edition.

Several specialists think that it is unusual to find a space that promotes design in its most diverse disciplines. Hence a space like this, also located in one of the most outstanding countries in this field, has had so much acceptance among professionals. In Cuba’s case —those interested could participate directly via the Internet and through the National Office for Industrial Design (ONDI)— the response to the summoning was significant.

There are other similar forums, but their profile responds more to graphic design. An example of that is the International Poster Biennale in Mexico, city where an important representation of Cuban graphic designers has returned recently.

In the coming days, Casa de las Americas will house exhibition “Voces en Libertad” (Voices in Freedom), initiative of that event, in tribute to the Bicentenary of the beginning of struggles for independence in the continent and the 100 years of the Mexican Revolution. The exhibition will be opened on Monday 22 at 6:30 pm, to round off the first day of the International Colloquium “La Amarica Latina y el Caribe entre la independencia de las metropolis coloniales y la integracion emancipatoria” (Latin America and the Caribbean between independence from colonial metropolises and emancipatory integration), which will run at Casa de las Americas from November 22 to 24.
