2010.11.18 - 19:30:17 / [email protected]. Sancti Spiritus, Cuba.- Forty-three percent of the Cuban population suffers either overweight or obesity, according to Dr. Jorge Pablo Alfonso Guerra, president of the Cuban Society of Nephrology and a pioneer of kidney transplant in the island.

In the presentation of his latest book entitled “Obesidad: epidemia del siglo XXI” (Obesity: an epidemic of the 21st century) in Sancti Spiritus, the doctor said obesity is associated to life styles and is a risk factor in heart, brain and kidney diseases, among others.

According to the World Health Organization obesity is considered a non-transmissible chronic disease and it is one of the most frequent conditions in the planet.

In his book, Dr. Alfonso Guerra assured that children and teenagers tend to combine factors that can lead to obesity such as unhealthy diets, a growing trend to do less exercise and false health and beauty patterns.

Alfonso Guerra is the author or co-author of more than nine books and he has several national and international publications.
