The United Nations called on Wednesday for eliminating new HIV/AIDS infections and related discrimination and deaths, three decades after the disease appeared.

The request was part of a message issued at the UN headquarters in New York by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to mark World AIDS Day.

Our goal is to achieve universal access to medicine for preventing, treating and supporting all HIV victims, the message states.

Ban Ki-moon highlighted the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, mentioning the growing reduction of the number of people who are infected and the increase in those who receive treatment.

According to the secretary general, the first part of the Millennium Development Goals related to this disease has been reached, because the spread of the virus has been stopped and it is beginning to be reverted.
