Cuban state food importer Alimport S.A. agreed to buy 20,000 tons of dry beans from U.S. companies, the Minnesota-based Northarvest Bean Growers Association reported.

According to Northarvest, commodity broker PS International sold 10,000 tons, or 220,000 bags, of black and pinto beans. WestStar Food Co. sold 5,000 tons of pinto beans, which are scheduled to leave the port at Corpus Christi Dec. 13. Finally, St. Hilarie Seed Co. sold 5,000 tons of black beans.

In late November, a North Dakota delegation led by Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring was in Havana to negotiate bean and seed potato sales. During meetings, Alimport expressed interest in an additional 5,000 tons of beans. The delegation included Northarvest directors Alan Juliuson and Todd Sorenson.
