12/08/2010. The Cutumba Folklore Ballet will perform in the opening ceremony of the festival of the Brooklyn Arts Academy (BAM) in its 2011 edition, in the US city of New York.

Odalis Calzadilla, direction assistant of the company, explained to AIN that it will be the second time the music and dance group takes part in the international meeting, after successful presentations in 2002.

The group, exponent of the art expression with African and Haitian origins of the Cuban culture, will present its show Estampas del Carnaval santiaguero (Pictures of a Santiago carnival), with the choreography of maestro Idalberto Bandera –director of the group– premiered in 1983.

Recreating the most famous Cuban popular parties, it is worth mentioning the colors and the traditional rhythms of the eastern Cuban beat, with the sound of the Chinese trumpet and the characters deeply rooted in the imaginary of that Caribbean celebration.

Yalina Carrero, specialist in public relationships in the group, expressed the deep happiness of its members by representing the island in an international event, and added that it is a great responsibility to keep the prestige and the high quality of the Cuban arts.

Cutumba was created in Santiago de Cuba in 1959 as part of the Oriente Folklore Group and took its current name in 1970.

Besides the artistic representation of the old African and Haitian mark, they also carry out a research about the legacy of that legacy in the national identity.
