Sábado, 18 de diciembre de 2010.Santiago de Cuba, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) The sessions of the Cuban Parliament at Havana''s Convention Center have been closely followed by Cubans all over the country.

Since early in the morning, newspapers have covered the event and at night local television has broadcast a summary of the lawmakers' debates on key issues for the country and citizens.

The analysis in Parliament have coincided with the debates being held at workplaces and grassroots union and political organizations to comment on the courses of Cuba's economy and society as stated in the draft guidelines that will be discussed at the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba next year.

Many of the concerns expressed by the members of the People's Power National Assembly about several of the 291 guidelines have echoed those of workers, students, retirees or housewives.

On the first day of meeting, debates dealt about this year's economic results and the proposed plan for 2011, so lawmakers received first-hand information about the complex circumstances in which Cuba's economy had to develop, in addition to insufficiencies, the negative effect of the global economic and financial crisis and the tightening of the U.S. blockade.

They were also informed about the plans to improve and update the tax system, one of the pillars on which the necessary economic and social changes to will be based.

Inevitably, dealing with these issues implies learning more about economic terms and there is growing concern about the need to work out on their meaning and their relation to people's expectations.

The update of the Cuban economic model involves, in the first place, Cubans themselves, who will work to achieve the goals of justice and humane nobility inherent to socialism.

The Parliament's sessions will continue to clarify the strategies that will mark the country's future, and people will closely follow the debates at home, workplaces, streets and squares.rma/jg/mc
