01.01.2011, 22.51. HAVANA, January 1 (Itar-Tass) – Cuba is marking the 52nd anniversary since the victory of the Revolution.
Concerts, fairs and theatrical performances are held all across the country. A traditional 21-volley salute from the walls of the San Carlos de la Cabana fortress in Havana kicked off the program of festivities.
Some streets and public buildings in the capital are decorated with national flags, revolutionary slogans and graffiti.
Heads of state and government of a number of foreign countries have sent official congratulations to Cuba.
Local officials sources indicate that the Cuban people is facing the task of “achieving new success on the basis of a strategy promulgating efficiency, productiveness and frugality,” and it is the accentuation of this economic policy that promises to become the top priority for the nation in 2011.
An overt struggle against the dictatorship of President Fulgencio Batista started out with an assault of Moncada barracks in 1953 and ended January 1, 1959, when Fidel Castro declared the victory of the insurgent army in Santiago de Cuba, a city in the east of the island.
Along with July 26, January 1 is one of the major holidays in this Caribbean nation.
