By PL. The world will observe through 2011 the International Year for People of African Descent, established by the UN to promote the full enjoyment of economic, cultural, social, civil and political rights for these communities.
2011, International Year for People of African Descent
2011 proclaimed as International Year for People of African Descent.
This is an agreement reached in 2009 by the UN General Assembly, which reaffirmed the validity of all statements, agreements and other international instruments related to the development of the descendents of African heritage.
These include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Also, the conventions against discrimination of women, for the Rights of the Child and to protect the rights of all migrant workers and their families, among others, are envisioned.
The purpose of the agreement of the Assembly is to strengthen national actions and international cooperation for the benefit of African descenst and their rights and promote greater understanding and respect for the diversity of their heritage and culture.
Three weeks ago, the United Nations held a ceremony to greet the International Year which starts on January 1 and gave a loud call for a definitive end to racial discrimination.
